What Experienced ISO Auditors Actually Look For

Most experienced ISO auditors are not just reviewing procedures. They are looking for signs that the management system is genuinely being used throughout the organisation.

If ISO Auditors Had X-Ray Vision

A lot of organisations think auditors mainly look at procedures.

Most experienced auditors are actually looking for something else.

Signs that the management system is genuinely being used.

You can normally tell within a short period of time.

* Employees know the process without reading from the procedure

* Actions are being followed through properly

* Records are easy to retrieve

* Risks are understood consistently across departments

* The system feels operational rather than staged for the visit

And the opposite is usually obvious too.

You start hearing things like:

* “I’ll need to find that”

* “I think there’s a newer version somewhere”

* “We updated that recently”

* “The person who handled this left”

Good management systems leave evidence everywhere.

Not just in folders.

You see it in:

* conversations

* behaviours

* decision making

* operational control

* leadership involvement

That’s why the strongest ISO systems rarely feel overcomplicated.

They feel embedded into the business.
